Schola Cantorum has embarked on an exciting new commission involving a collaboration between composer Toby Young and writer Jennifer Thorp. Toby has written a set of three madrigals, which aim to explore the lives of people living with mental illness in order to give voice to those affected by the trauma, isolation and stigma of their separation from society. Taking inspiration from cutting edge clinical research at the university, the 'difficult' nature of the subject matter is matched by equally challenging music.

The concert takes place in the tranquil surroundings of Christ Church Picture Gallery; in the company of some of the most important Old Master paintings in the country, which deal with equally challenging topics in visual form. The programme also includes a rarely heard anthem for double choir by Ivor Gurney, works by Herbert Howells and Kenneth Leighton, and a new piece by Oxford student William Marshall.

The Toby Young Commission has been sponsored by Cantata Dramatica.

Please note that the programme includes texts with potentially triggering content covering mental health issues such as eating disorders, depression and psychosis
Schola Cantorum sings Benjamin Britten's 'Rejoice in the Lamb' with text by eighteenth century poet Christopher Smart, together with a selection of intensely expressive madrigals by Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo.
Schola Cantorum, under their new conductor Steven Grahl, joins with four outstanding young soloists to perform Brahms’s own arrangement of Ein deutsches Requiem, for piano four-hands accompaniment.

This concert is part of the Oxford Lieder Festival.
