Schola 50th Anniversary Reunion 2010
On Saturday 1st May 2010 the choir were joined by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and over 150 former members and distinguished soloists including Dame Emma Kirkby and Christine Rice in Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre for its 50th anniversary reunion concert, featuring Bach's Magnificat, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and The King Shall Rejoice.
After two years of planning, the largest gathering of Schola members ever assembled met on the Friday evening in the nave of the University Church for their first rehearsal led by James Burton. After brushing off their vocal chords and reacquainting themselves with Handel and Bach, alumni were treated by the present choir members to a private performance of James MacMillan's new piece Bring Us, O Lord God which was commissioned for the choir's 50th anniversary. The following morning the choir assembled again, this time in St Peter's College chapel for more rehearsal before heading to the Town Hall to enjoy a lunch party and an exhibition of the choir's archive. The Sheldonian's choir stalls were full to brimming by the time the OAE tuned up ready to rehearse in the afternoon, and an unforgettable evening concert ensued followed by a drinks reception in the nearby Divinity School. 50 years of friendship and music making was thus celebrated in style!
