'It’s music of wonderful variety – in the Lorca settings the fusion of the vivid Spanish words and Rautavaara’s gloriously Finnish cool make real sparks fly – especially when performed as characterfully as here'

Einojuhani Rautavaara : Choral MusicSchola Cantorum of Oxford, James Burton (conductor)
Hyperion Records Einojuhani Rautavaara’s reputation as one of the greatest living Finnish composers is assured. Once Sibelius’s protégé, over his long career he has achieved success in a great number of musical genres, particularly that of opera. But it is his choral works that have made him a household name, both in his native country and internationally. Recorded here is a fascinating selection of works, including the Suite de Lorca—one of the most popular Finnish choral works of all time—and all demostrating the unique style forged by the composer on his travels through the musical fashions of the twentieth century. His rich and sonorous neo-Romantic textures have a steely modernist edge and the resulting voice is one that is deeply attractive and approachable, yet endlessly captivating. He sets texts of great passion and complexity and does not hold back from expressing deep emotion. Rautavaara’s music is performed by Schola Cantorum of Oxford, described in The Times as ‘Oxford’s classy intercollegiate choir’ and highly acclaimed for their two previous recordings for Hyperion. The choir is conducted by James Burton. |
Sweet is the MemorySchola Cantorum of Oxford, James Burton (conductor), Mark Willams (organist)
Faber Music 0-571-59856-0 [DDD] In late June 2009 Schola recorded a disc of new music from the publishing house Faber. This CD includes favorites such as "The Lord is my Shepherd" by Howard Goodall, popularly known as the theme tune from the BBC TV show "The Vicar of Dibley". It is recorded here in an all new arrangement by the composer himself. Other favorites include Morten Lauridsen's ever popular "Ave Maria" and Howard Goodall's "Veni, Sancte Spiritus". These works are alongside less well known but equally sublime works such as Matthew Martin's "Ecce Concipies" and Jonathan Dove's entertaining choral fable "Who killed Cock Robin?". Also included is a previously unrecorded and unpublished work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which is an absolute treat. |
Randall Thompson: The Peaceable KingdomSchola Cantorum of Oxford, James Burton (conductor)
Hyperion Records For the past half century the music of Randall Thompson has remained a staple in the choral repertoire. These delightful works are marked by skilful craftsmanship, a pervasive singability and uncommon beauty. This new recording features Thompson’s The Peaceable Kingdom, based upon texts from the book of Isaiah, as well as his Mass, The Last Invocation and Fare Well. Also included is one of Thompson’s most popular works, his Alleluia, written at the request of Serge Koussevitsky and premiered in July 1940, and today a beloved and time-honoured contribution to the choral repertoire. The informative booklet notes are by one of Thompson’s most constant admirers, the fellow-American composer Morten Lauridsen. |
Nicholas Maw: One foot in Eden still, I stand & other choral worksSchola Cantorum of Oxford, Mark Shepherd (conductor)
Hyperion Records Nicholas Maw is a dominant force in contemporary British music. His Violin Concerto won for Joshua Bell the Mercury Music Prize for Classical Album of the Year in 2000, while his latest opera, Sophie’s Choice—a Covent Garden commission setting William Styron’s harrowing tale of Auschwitz and its aftermath—is currently receiving its American premieres. Throughout his long career Maw has periodically found time amidst his predominantly orchestral and operatic output to craft some inimitable choral works. This new recording by Schola Cantorum of Oxford present many first recordings and gives a broad overview of Maw’s choral achievements. |
'Here's a vital and beautifully performed collection of modern a cappella choral music from a most excellent choir with a considerable recording history ... It's not a surprise that Mr Summerly and his choir can handle fiendishly difficult modern music with all of the skill, authority and pleasing sound they bring to early music. '

Children of our time
Schola Cantorum of Oxford, Jeremy Summerly (conductor)
Hyperion Records In 1978 Schola Cantorum of Oxford—the university’s acclaimed chamber choir—recorded Tippett’s Five Negro Spirituals from A child of our time. Sir Michael wrote, in his sleeve note accompanying the LP release on L’Oiseau Lyre (DSLO 25, re-issued on CD Belart 461 628-2, no longer available): ‘I had never heard the complete set till the recording sessions. I then realised that the sound of these songs when sung thus is quite different from their original settings in the oratorio. They became, as it were, the huge voice of a crowd of folk singing together. It should be clear from the above account of all the variety of pieces on this [all-Tippett] disc how remarkable and resilient a group of young singers the Schola Cantorum of Oxford is, under their equally young, gifted conductor Nicholas Cleobury.’ Some twenty years later, under Jeremy Summerly, the choir was asked to make a new recording of the Spirituals to mark the ninetieth birthday of the composer, by then the group’s long-standing Patron. This new disc—never previously released—is the result of those sessions, where the Tippett works are complemented by recordings of the winning entries in an international composition competition organized by the choir and other works written for it around the same time. |
